Ultimate Wild Mushroom Experience – Foraging and Photography – a South Africa interest event taking place on 2016-11-05 12:00:00 in Canada
Day 1 Wild Mushroom Foraging Walk Join chef and mycologist Bill Jones, Author of the Deerholme Mushroom and Foraging Books. We will take a walk in the forests of the Cowichan Valley to explore the fertile mushroom terrain of the area. We will be in areas that are productive for mushroom foraging and will have a chance to learn about the various edible and poisonous mushroom types and photograph them in the field. Photography techniques: Shooting in natural light – ambient light in the forest Technical settings i.e. aperture, shutter speed, getting exposure right, using your light meter Lens considerations Using a hotshoe flash – bounce flash, reflected flash Working with difficult light – high ISO settings Using a reflector to enhance the shots, diffusing the light if necessary Day 2 Food Photography with Wild Mushrooms The day features a hands-on food styling session working with a wide variety of wild mushrooms. Bill will demonstrate a few mushroom based dishes and feed the group a lunch based on local products, wild mushrooms and global food styles. Photography techniques: Shooting food in natural light – window light and the ambient light Technical settings i.e. aperture, shutter speed Lens considerations Using a hotshoe flash – bounce flash, reflected flash Working with difficult light – high ISO settings Using a reflector to enhance the shots, diffusing the light if necessary Composition considerations Shooting for texture and shape Simplifying the shot Use of props i.e. knives, forks, spoons, surfaces, windows etc Editing your food images using Adobe Lightroom Workshop includes: Lunch on day two What’s not included? This is a custom made workshop that has been designed with the photographer in mind. You will learn about food styling and what makes a great food photograph. You will learn all the necessary techniques to make your food photographs look professional without using studio lights or other equipment. What skill level is required? You will need to know how to shoot on manual and control your aperture and shutter shutter speed, as well as adjust your ISO settings. You will need to know how to use a hotshoe flash (if you have one) Fitness rating and difficulty? Intermediate – You will need to be able to walk short distances with your camera equipment. How much instruction will you receive? You will receive instruction throughout the workshop. There will be practical hands on sessions and times of demonstration of the concepts being discussed. What photography gear will you need? A camera – DSLR or mirrorless A selection of lenses, if possible 50mm, 85mm and a macro lens if you have one A cable release A tripod A hotshot flash (optional) A laptop computer with Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop installed Instructors: Bill’s Bio Bill Jones is a chef and author based on Deerholme Farm in the Cowichan Valley of Vancouver Island. He is the author of 12 books and the winner of 3 world cookbook awards for his efforts. His books have also garnered Canadian Food Writing Awards and have been best sellers in Canada and the US. Bill’s work has been profiled in prestigious media such as the New York Times, Food and Wine, Gourmet, Saveur and Harrowsmith. Bill is also a professional food stylist and photographer with many books, magazine shots and TV shoots on his resume.
