World Alzheimer’s Day 2025: “Ask About Dementia. Ask About Alzheimer’s”

ADASA Eastern Cape joins the global community in commemorating World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September 2025, under the theme: “Ask about Dementia. Ask about Alzheimer’s.”

This year’s theme invites individuals, families, caregivers, and communities to open conversations, seek understanding, and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

In South Africa, where many families face the realities of dementia with limited resources and support, asking questions is a powerful first step, says Dr Heather Rauch, Regional Manager at ADASA Eastern Cape.

Whether it’s understanding early symptoms, accessing care, or simply learning how to support a loved one, every question matters – memories matter.

“When we ask, we learn. When we learn, we care better. And when we care, we restore dignity,” she says.

Throughout September, ADASA Eastern Cape will host a series of community dialogues, caregiver workshops, and awareness campaigns across the Province.

These events aim to: encourage open conversations about dementia and Alzheimer’s; promote early diagnosis and access to support services; reduce stigma and foster inclusive care environments; and share practical tools and resources for families and caregivers, according to Rauch.

“We invite media partners, healthcare professionals, educators, community leaders and companies to stand with us in amplifying this message.

“Together, we can build a more informed, compassionate Eastern Cape – where no one walks the dementia journey alone,” says Rauch..
