WILLIAM SMITH
African American Music Hall Artist
Born 14 June 1884 in Brooklyn NY
Married to British Subject , Nellie Daisy Bartlett (born London 17 Apr 1895)
The Sie Tahar Troupe, which is referenced several times in his passport applications, is billed elsewhere are "The Sie Tahar Arab Troupe" and as Algerian acrobats.
Note: I had originally thought that this was the “William H. Smith” who attested to the identity of Peter Charlie Johnson in Moscow in 1917, however, I am now convinced that these are two different men. The signatures do not match and this London based William Smith did not show any pattern of travelling to Eastern Europe and Russia in his professional life. Rather, he mainly performed in Britain, Ireland, France, South America and South Africa.
