Today, acclaimed singer-songwriter Jenna Nicholls shares a new single, “When A Good Love Goes Away,” along with an official music video. A reflection on mourning love lost and reconnecting with oneself, the song was produced by 3x GRAMMY® Award-winner Larry Campbell (Levon Helm, Bob Dylan) and is the second offering from her upcoming fourth studio album, The Commuter, which arrives via Royal Potato Family on Friday, October 10. Pre-orders/pre-saves are available now. Of the song, Jenna shares:
“This is a song about the end of a marriage. I recalled a friend saying she knew her marriage was over years before she voiced it. They’d both been desperately trying to avoid what they both knew deep down was coming. Saying goodbye to something you’ve built with someone is like mourning a death: one experiences the stages of grief in a very similar way, i.e. denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance – they’re all there. This song represents being able to love but to still leave at the same time.”
Hailed for her unique ability to transport listeners to a different place and time with her distinctively inspired acoustic songcraft, Nicholls will herald The Commuter with a wide-ranging live schedule that includes headline shows, festival appearances, dates alongside Peter Mulvey and Brian Dunne (of Fantastic Cat), and more. About Jenna Nicholls:
Jenna Nicholls weaves a spell with her utterly individual tapestry of sound, strumming her ukulele with the spirit of New Orleans or crooning a cowboy’s tale with the soul of the West. Her melodies, like vintage vinyl spun anew, carry the weight of memory and promise of tomorrow. Hailing from a small town near Pittsburgh, PA, Nicholls gravitated to the creative hotbed of NYC’s Lower East Side, where she honed her abilities as a songwriter and performer while forging lasting friendships with other like-minded artists and musicians. Three albums on her own dime revealed a restless muse and lush, nostalgic style encompassing classic sounds spanning anything from Singin’ in the Rain to Bessie Smith. Along the way, Nicholls won over audiences on the storied stages of such vaunted venues as NYC’s Beacon Theatre and Carnegie Hall while also performing alongside fellow artists like Ingrid Michaelson, Glen Hansard, Lucius, and Joan as Policewoman.
The title of Nicholls’ new album, The Commuter, is fitting in every sense – the story of a journey both musical and personal. “The songs curated here represent a time of transition,” she says, “from residing in NYC to a new home in upstate NY, from life in a corporate world to finding my voice in a creative one.” Songs like “Tie A String,” “All Those Days You Won’t Remember,” and the poignant title track signal a sense of departure as well as new beginnings, boasting a richer sound with inventive, fleshed-out arrangements and an astoundingly wide-ranging collection of original songs. Still, The Commuter makes it perfectly plain that Jenna Nicholls remains steadfast in her goals, invoking breathtaking emotion and musical artistry by simply staying true to her instincts.
