Viltrox releases AF 56mm F1.7 APS-C lens for Fujifilm and Nikon cameras

After a somewhat low-key announcement last week, Viltrox has released a new APS-C lens for Fujifilm and Nikon cameras. The China-based manufacturer introduces the new autofocus 56mm F1.7 (85mm equivalent) lens, and at $139, it’s sure to pique the interest of those looking for a fast budget lens.

The 56mm F1.7 has 11 elements in 9 groups with 9 aperture blades. It uses a stepper motor, promising “accurate and smooth focusing,” and has a minimum focus distance of 0.55m (21.6”) and is very lightweight at 171g (6 oz) for X-mount and 187g (6.5 oz) for Z-mount.

Viltrox says the lens has an aluminum bayonet, however it does not mention the materials used for the rest of the lens’ exterior. At that weight and price, it’s difficult to imagine anything other than a plastic build. We did reach out to confirm the build quality, but we’re yet to receive a response. If we hear back, we’ll be sure to update this story.

The company says the front of the lens is fully waterproof, but Viltrox doesn’t claim the rest of the lens has weather sealing.

If you enjoy the physical ergonomics of Fujifilm and Nikon cameras, it’s worth noting that this lens does not have an aperture ring. Curiously, Viltrox’s 56mm F1.4 did have an aperture ring. This is not a dealbreaker; it is just something to be aware of. If that’s an issue, the recent Meike AF 55mm F1.4 may make a sound alternative, though it’s slightly more expensive at $200.

Our DPREVIEW Tribute:

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview closed on 10 April 2023. This difficult decision was part of the annual operating plan review that parent company, Amazon, shared earlier this year.

Over the course of 25 years, DP Review built up a reputation as being one of the most informative places to go for information about that new camera or lens you’re after. DP Review began as an independent reviews site based in the UK in 1998, the brainchild of Philip and Joanna Askey, but it was eventually purchased by Amazon in 2007 and relocated over to Seattle in the USA in 2010.

Cheers DPReview – thanks for the great work and content that guided photographers, videographers and techno junkies the world over!
