Versatile technology offers renewed opportunity for 8K content to flourish
South Africa – 10th of March 2023 – The availability of 8K content has been a topic of conversation in the industry for a while now. The first 8K TVs were introduced a few years ago and became quite popular because of their high-resolution realistic images and enhanced viewing experience, particularly in sports and entertainment broadcasts.
Fast-forward to 2022 and native 8K content is still relatively hard to find, making many question whether buying an 8K TV is worth the investment. Sony’s TVs are 8K compatible even though currently very little content is being produced in 8K. This is primarily due to the lack of efficient equipment to produce 8K content with supporting features, including the likes of True-to-Tone, Dual Base ISO, X-OCN Internal Recording, ND Filters, X-OCN format, 8.6 K sensor, and a proper Extension System.
The good news is that manufacturers are aware of the lack of availability of native content and are focusing on upscaling 8K technology. So, for instance, Sony’s Venice 2 is a cinema camera created by and for the cinematographer. It offers a choice between 8K and 6K sensors, both of which boast incredibly wide latitude and gamut.
With the Venice 2, filmmakers have greater freedom of expression in grading than ever before, with either 16 or 15+ stops of latitude and exquisite color rendition. It also offers an impressive new 8.6K full-frame image sensor and ability to shoot in any format, such as Super35 and Anamorphic.
The X-OCN format is very easy to work with in terms of computer processing power and working on it in post-production. The dual base ISO leads to amazing performance in low light capabilities. It also has the ability to reproduce true reflections of skin colors, lending a certain softness to skin tones.
Furthermore, the Venice 2 Rialto (extension system), detaches from the sensor block giving the filmmaker more freedom. This was really important in productions such as Top Gun with the Venice 1, which is only available for the 6K version with the 8K version to be released in early 2023.
Advanced technology like this is expected to drive future growth in 8K broadcast in sports and entertainment applications. According to industry estimates, the 8K technology market is projected to grow from USD 2.9 billion in 2019 to USD 26.8 billion by 2024. If more 8K content is produced in the medium term, 8K TVs will no longer simply be an expensive way to watch 4K movies.
