Traditional Yoruba Batik, Adire and Tie-dye with Indigo – a Africa interest event taking place on 2017-10-02 09:00:00 in United States
Traditional Yoruba Batik, Adire and Tie-dye with Indigo
October 2-6, 2017 (9am-4pm) ? Students will learn 3 processes for dying fabric: the Batik process of creating designs in wax resist using wood stamps, stencils, or foam rubber; the Adire Eleko process of creating designs using cassava paste (also called yucca), a small broom, and a chicken feather; and the Tie-Dye process of using raffia to tie and then dye the fabric. The primary dye I use in my workshops is Indigo. It has been used as a dye in Africa for at least 2000 years. Indigo is an organic substance, it comes from the indigo plant which grows wild in Nigeria. It is used for medicine as well (it cures an upset stomach) and is also painted on houses to ward off viruses. Visit website
