1968 – American sprinter Jim Hines anchors US men’s 4 x 100m relay team to win his second gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics; with team mates Charles Greene, Mel Pender and Ronnie Ray Smith sets world record 38.24s
1971 – Senator in the US Congress Edward Kennedy calls for a withdrawal of British troops from Northern Ireland and all-party negotiations to establish a United Ireland
