’Throwback Cinema’ Movies Are Perfect for Merry Month of March

Enjoy these classic movies for just R50 at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas

Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema promotion continues in the merry month of March. As the weather starts turning, a cosy cinema is the perfect place to spend a few hours with your friends, family and loved ones. And, with tickets at the classic price of just R50 to enjoy some fabulous titles from the past, what’s not to enjoy?

“Our cinema audiences are really enjoying the titles we are rescreening, and Throwback Cinema is providing a popular must-see-again option for the big screen. The March line-up includes some special films featuring some big stars, to enjoy either as repeat viewing or for a first-time cinema experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

First up, releasing on Friday 07 March, is Good Will Hunting. This 1997 classic film won two Oscars: Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robin Williams and Best Screenplay for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and also received a further seven nominations. Matt Damon plays the role of Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT who has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life. The film features an all-star cast of award-winning actors in addition to Matt Damon including Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård and Minnie Driver.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year is the epic psychological sci-fi thriller, Inception. A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology, is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO. But, his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster. Directed by the award-winning Christopher Nolan, the film stars some big Hollywood names including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Kim Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine.

Releasing on Friday, 21 March is the boyband documentary One Direction: This is Us, which was first released in 2013. With the recent passing of band member Liam Payne in 2024, the return of this documentary to the big screen is all the more poignant. The film follows Niall, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Harry’s meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena to thousands of screaming fans. This intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon is interwoven with stunning live concert footage, commentary from the boys themselves and a view through their own eyes of what it was like to be One Direction. Rounding off the list of Throwback Cinema titles for March is the delightful 1995 movie Babe, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and releases from 28 March at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas. Gentle farmer Arthur Hoggett wins a piglet Babe at a county fair. Narrowly escaping his fate as Christmas dinner, Babe bonds with motherly border collie Fly and discovers that he too can herd sheep. But will the other animals accept him? Directed by Chris Noonan, the film stars James Cromwell, Magda Szubanski and Christine Cavanaugh.
