BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa: South African mattress manufacturer Mr Mattress has issued consumer guidance for soft-mattress shoppers, warning that the plush beds that perform best in showroom tests are frequently the quickest to fail at home, and that a single construction question can protect buyers.
“The mattress that feels most incredible in the first ten seconds is often the worst long-term buy on the floor,” says Andries Taljaard, founder of Mr Mattress. “There are two totally different ways to build a soft bed. One of them holds its shape for a decade. The other develops a hip-shaped hollow within two years. They feel nearly identical at the point of sale.”
Soft-surface versus soft-through
According to the manufacturer, the critical distinction is between soft-surface construction, a plush comfort layer over a dense, supportive core, and soft-through construction, where the softness extends through the entire mattress. Soft-through builds allow the sleeper’s hips to sink progressively deeper as low-density foam relaxes over time, bowing the spine.
“The feeling people love about a soft bed comes from the surface. The damage comes from the core,” says Taljaard. “Buyers should love the surface and interrogate the core.”
Three checks before buying any soft mattress
The company advises soft-mattress shoppers to: ask for the support core’s density figure (45 kg/m3 or higher indicates a genuine support core); press firmly into the mattress centre to feel for underlying resistance; and scrutinise warranty terms, since short or vague sagging clauses often signal a soft-through build.
The manufacturer notes that soft mattresses genuinely suit three groups, side sleepers, lighter sleepers under roughly 60 kg, and those waking with pressure marks at the shoulder or hip, while most other sleepers do better with a slightly firmer feel.
A published spec behind the plush layer
Mr Mattress manufactures its soft-feel option, the Revive Memory Foam, as a soft-surface build: breathable open-cell memory foam over a high-density core, from R4,899 with a 10-year written warranty. All the company’s mattresses sell factory-direct with a 365-night home trial and free national delivery on its website.
