Story topic this week…

The Secrets of League Park
Home of the Cleveland Indians for over 50 years – and the Cleveland Spiders before that, – League Park is where Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run, Cy Young pitched the first game in 1891, and where the Indians won the 1920 World Series. If you are a baseball fan and you haven’t been to this historic spot in the Hough neighborhood, you are missing a bucket list item! During this Cleveland Stories panel, Margaret Reardon, Bob Zimmer, and Joe Gazzo will share stories and artifacts from the early years of Cleveland baseball.

Margaret Reardon Bio

Margaret Reardon has been the Administrator at the Museum since 2016. Her love of baseball began at the age of 10 when she questioned her father on why he only took her brother to Cleveland Indians games. She was reluctantly brought along for a Sunday doubleheader even though her brother pronounced “she’ll never last.” Not only did she last: she went to every weekend game with her dad until she left for college. Her love of baseball, as well as a good story, all things history, and Cleveland, make her feel qualified to present programs such as this one.

Bob Zimmer Bio

Bob Zimmer is the president and founder of the Baseball Heritage Museum. His vision of honoring the diverse history of baseball began during the 1997 All Star Game festivities as a one time exhibit on the Negro Leagues at his family jewelry store on East 4th Street. Twenty one years later, the vision is going strong from the Museum’s location in the former ticket office at historic League Park. Baseball history has much to be thankful for in Bob Zimmer.

Joe Gazzo Bio

Joe Gazzo is the Director of Education a the Baseball Heritage Museum and is involved in reaching out the community by teaching art and presenting programs. A picture by one of his students is now at The Smithsonian Institution! He also serves as a member of the Museum’s Board of Trustees.

The goal of the Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is to bring to life some of the fun, interesting stories about Cleveland’s past – from sports, to rock ‘n roll, to Millionaire’s Row, — the series will focus on tidbits from Cleveland’s past that will really thrill the audience. The Music Box is presenting this series in partnership with the Western Reserve Historical Society’s new Cleveland History Center. We think the Cleveland History Center is one of the most important museums in Cleveland. An unknown gem that Clevelanders should know more about, and support. It is the only museum in Cleveland dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of Cleveland. The Cleveland History Center includes two mansions, the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, Research Library, Kidzibits Hands-On Gallery, rotating exhibitions, and the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel.
