The African Kora with John Hughes – a Africa interest event taking place on 2017-03-22 09:45:00 in United States
Playing ancient traditional instruments not often heard in the United States (many of which he builds himself), John Hughes will introduce students to traditional African music on the kora—a West African stringed instrument shaped like a lute. Having studied the music, song, and dance of West Africa for more than 24 years, Hughes takes his audience on an intimate tour of the universal musical expressions of joy and hope that is at once soothing and uplifting. An innovative composer, kora player, percussionist and vocalist, Hughes has trained with numerous master drummers and dancers from Guinea and Mali, including Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate, Sekou Sylla, and Youssouf Koumbassa.
