Study in Canada? IELTS is your registration passport

Canada is favoured as an emigration destination for many young South Africans. Being home to 10 of the 250 top-ranked universities worldwide makes it a very attractive destination to study.

Chris Cooter, High Commissioner of Canada in South Africa explains that the time spent obtaining an undergraduate degree and then working for a local employer on a post-graduation work visa all counts towards the requirements for citizenship—a natural path being followed by many aspiring Canadians. “We have a desired skills list and professionals with certain degrees and skillsets are especially sought after.”

“Canada is rated number one in terms of quality of life and Canadians themselves have a reputation for being warm and friendly, with a diverse and inclusive culture and a safe society. Prospects for young graduates are good too—in the last decade alone, Canada created 1.6 million new jobs for graduates. Canada also provides some of the best value for money in education in the world,” says Cooter.

English a basic requirement
While Canada is undoubtedly opening its doors for talent to come over, the country does want to ensure that students can cope with the demands of studying in English. Before you apply to study in Canada, you need to show your proficiency in English.

English is the third most spoken language in the world, with 379 million speakers worldwide. Being able to communicate in the native language of the country you wish to work or study in, has a wide range of benefits. It is also essential for job opportunities as well as integration into the community.

IELTS is the most popular test for those looking to migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. It is globally recognised by more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools and immigration bodies including 3,400 institutions in the USA – says Balvinder Singh Kandra, Director Examinations, Southern Africa Cluster at British Council.

British Council gives an edge
Around 60% of IELTS candidates in South Africa currently have Canada in mind when they take the test. “English proficiency is a fundamental requirement for access to the attractive study and work opportunities Canada provides and candidates have given us feedback that IELTS has been their ticket to studying at their dream university.” says Kandra.

The British council provides its IELTS candidates with free preparation materials to support and guide them through the process.
