St. George’s University Opens January 2026 Admission for Aspiring African Medical Students

Cape Town – 25 November 2025: St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, has officially opened applications for its January 2026 intake, offering aspiring medical students from Africa the opportunity to pursue an international medical education. Since its founding in 1976, SGU has graduated more than 23,000 doctors, many of whom have gone on to practice in the United States and around the world who are part of a strong alumni network.1 For the past eleven years, SGU has also been the largest provider of doctors into first-year US residencies, with over 1,035 placements in 2025 alone.2

The January start date gives students an alternative pathway into medical training with several distinct advantages. It allows them to begin studies earlier without waiting for the traditional fall cycle and provides smaller cohorts that may encourage closer interaction with faculty and peers, creating an intimate learning environment. Students entering in January also benefit from alignment with the global academic calendar, offering additional preparation time for key milestones such as residency applications and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

SGU offers multiple program/ tracks to suit students’ educational backgrounds, including the four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program and five-, six-, or seven-year MD tracks. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure in various countries, subject to local requirements, and gain clinical experience through a wide network of more than 75 affiliated sites in the US and UK. Financial aid and scholarships, such as academic merit-based and community-focused awards, are available for qualified international applicants, supporting students from diverse backgrounds in pursuing their education.

SGU also provides paths across continents to meet the needs of its international student community. In Grenada, students can choose from January, April, and August intakes, while in the United Kingdom, SGU’s partnership with Northumbria University offers additional start dates in September and January. These programs enable students to begin their studies in locations that best suit their academic and personal goals while remaining connected to SGU’s global community.

“Our January intake gives students the flexibility to start their medical education earlier and take advantage of the same curriculum, global community, and support that SGU is known for,” said David Anthonisz, Executive Director of International Student Recruitment at SGU. “Whether beginning in Grenada or the United Kingdom, students are preparing themselves for rewarding careers in healthcare worldwide.”

Applications for the January 2026 intake are now open, and interested students can learn more and apply through SGU’s official website here.

  1. Based on the number of students who have completed the Doctor of Medicine program from 1981-2024.
  2. As the medical school graduating the largest number of students per year, SGU places the largest number of graduates into residency programs each year, based on internal SGU graduate/expected graduate and residency placement data as of April 2025.
