Special Education Professional Learning Modules: Best Practices in Culturally Responsive Family Engagement for Families of Children with Disabilities – a Culture interest event taking place on 2018-04-04 09:00:00 in United States
*This is a one (1) day event – Wednesday, April 4, 2018 Audience: General and Special Education Teachers and Administrators Presenter: Nitza Diaz, SERC Consultant Description: Schools must foster strong, positive relationships among educators and families of many cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including those that have children with disabilities. School leaders can begin by asking courageous questions within the school that challenge beliefs and assumptions about families. With this learning module, school leaders will learn strategies for facilitating dialogue and creating a school community that values the perspectives of families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and supports their involvement and participation in the education of their children with disabilities. This dialogue ultimately helps build understanding of how the lives of students with disabilities are influenced by differences in parenting culture, perspectives on disability, the education system and the value of education, higher education goals, early childhood experiences, immigration, and other areas.
