SCM About Music: Mayakovsky: The realisation of a new opera – a Music interest event taking place on 2016-08-29 17:00:00 in Australia
You are invited to an Sydney Conservatorium of Music About Music Lecture given by Michael Smetanin (Conservatorium of Music). In July 2014 my third opera, entitled Mayakovsky, was premiered at the Carriageworks theatre complex by the Sydney Chamber Opera company. The road to completing and staging an opera is often difficult, and in fact quite possibly the most complex of all musical projects to complete. I track through the logistics, development and composition processes and explain how they are all fitted together to realise a work such as this. Michael Smetanin is one of Australia’s most distinctive composers. After completing study at the Sydney Conservatorium in 1981, he undertook three years’ study with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague between 1982-84. Smetanin’s music has been extensively commissioned, performed, and recorded internationally with works appearing on over 30 commercially released CD albums. Commissions include those from Schoenberg Ensemble, Bang on a Can All Stars, Orkest de Volharding, Elision and major orchestras in Australia. He holds a PhD in composition and is an Associate Professor at the Sydney Conservatorium, University of Sydney. More information – scm.research@sydney.edu.au or 02 9351 1391
