Daniel Pink, the bestselling author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About
What Motivates Us. So what does motivate us? The desire to be
self-directed. The will to master something. The hope to make a
contribution. It’s all what Pink calls “the purpose motive,” ?

After commenting on post by +Donovan Colbert I had to go find the video I
was talking about. Its amazing, and it explains IT People (in my opinion)
    perfectly.?

“Most good programmers do programming not because they expect to get paid
or get adulation by the public, but because it is fun to program.”
    — Linus Torvalds

On that note, I’d like to point out that faux-libertarian econo-dogmatists
    — who think humans are machines that rationally pursue maximum economic
return — are idiots who have literally no idea how people work.?

An awesome and popular video about how to get the best out of people.
This is an animated version of a speech by Daniel Pink.?

What do you think motivates you to do your best work? Psychologists and
Economists have shown repeatedly that when it comes to tasks requiring any
sort of cognitive ability, the higher the monetary reward, the WORSE the
performance. This sounds strange, we know. And yet, it’s true. This video
    explains why.?

Truth is everyone should be paid enough to not worry about money or
slightly more. No need for all the excess, it destroys lives. Everyone ends
up unhappy, even those who come out making millions most of the time.?

Every now and again I wander off and do something fun that’s also sorta
related to my work. I think the greatest satisfaction I get from working at
the Linux Foundation is that I feel free and encouraged to creatively
approach my workload — in a way that doesn’t just suck all fun out of my
job (and I think that was my biggest problem working at McGill IT). I hope
others on my team feel similarly encouraged to wander off every now and
again and show up with cool stuff they came up with. :)?

I’m working on a 5 year research study where we need to motivate users to
participate. There are a lot of different “intangible” ways to motivate
people to do things you want them to do…let’s take for instance making it
a competition instead of rewarding with money “hahahahaha…HEY LOOK!!! I’m
A GOLD Starbucks Member because I’ve bought “x” drinks and you are only
BRONZE!”…this is all over the place….look at these facebook games! Holy
molely! Some people are very serious about Farmville! Whoa! I tried to
explain these matters to a person that is offering $1000 BONUS (through the
workplace they are at) for anyone that quits smoking! I don’t think this
person understood…watch this “incentive” just fly away into the
wind…lalalalala…I’d bet money on it but I’d rather sit back and find
out later that it didn’t work…I WIN! LOL! ps- I’m also a GOLD Starbucks
Card Holder! Are you? BAM! ?

Hmmm … maybe I can relate. I know this rewards will be great if I keep
programming, but I don’t. I know I’m wasting my time with flappy birds –
but I’m pretty motivated to surpass 100. ?

I hadn’t seen this video in a while, but re-watching it, it has lost
    nothing of its potency.
(You may have to stop and rewind every now and then, since this 10-min talk
    moves at lightning speed.)?

A lot of software at Apache project is done at those paying jobs and the
companies pay for it. There is slightly different business model – free
testing by the users from the whole world, no obligations for bugs (e.g. no
SLAs), ideas from talented people for free. They make pretty good money out
    of it.
Another business model there – professional services for money. OSS is
becoming increasingly complex and hard to setup and deploy correctly.
I’m not saying you guys are wrong, I do support your point, but it’s just
OSS part is not that simple.?

Although I do believe this I don’t like it when you slap in the title
things like “truth” or “believe” because it’s kind of telling the viewer
that you better believe it. Again, I do believe this video.?
