Women model the orange creations from each of their groups. On Nov. 25, In Johannesburg, UN Women SAMCO and Edcon – South Africa’s largest non-food retailer – launched the Edgars UNite Campaign at EDcon’s headquarters. 40 women, survivors of abuse, from shelters across Johannesburg, were invited to Edcon’s headquarters with 200 other guests. The women had to design outfits using only orange fabric and pins. The campaign aims to create jobs for these women and more in the clothing industry, and Edcon will now be offering training to the women, with support from the fashion council. The fashion council estimates that each women employed in the clothing industry supports at least four people on her salary.
This year, to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world, the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign aims to “Orange the world.” During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, from International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November to Human Rights Day on 10 December, “Orange Events” will take place around the world.
