St. Peter’s from Ponte Umberto

I was walking from Piazza Cavour across the Ponte Umberto bridge, when I saw this view of St. Peter’s and the Sant’Angelo bridge … of all the churches and monuments in this city, it seemed like a good one to take, as a starting point for the morning stroll…
Note: a few days after I took this photo, heavy rains in Rome raised the river to almost flood levels, and a barge crashed into the second archway to the right on this bridge. See the December 12, 2008 New York Times article, "Rome on Alert for Tiber Breaking Its Banks," and this amazing photograph.
Note: this photo was published in a Feb 5, 2009 "Worldhum" blog titled "Rome: All the ‘Angels and Demons’ You Can Handle." It was also published in a Dec 6, 2011 blog titled "We Have a Pope (Habemus Papam)."

These photos were taken during a week in Rome, at the beginning of December 2008. I was participating in a computer conference, but had some free time at the beginning and end of the trip; unfortunately, the weather was not very cooperative, and my photography efforts were sometimes interrupted by rain…
