A cool South African City image:
Roeland St

The buildings along this stretch were partly Rust en Vreugd (in the distance is the Kimberley Hotel and golden brick building, built in its garden). The remainder of the stretch is the garden of Rustenburg, an almost completely forgotten market garden, the house demolished in the 1970s but hopelessly mangled by then.
On the right are the lower storeys of a truely awful 60s block originally called, wait for it, Ruskin House. Next is a delicious 1899 shop fronting the old School of Industry’s 1906 buildings.
Next, with the wavy parapet like a stretched out Cape gable, is 1924 motor workshops, having various names over the years, like Stollys Motors.
The little lane that leads to the site of the old market garden Rustenburg is next – just before the long horizontals of the Nash Motors 1936 building (with the pitched tiled roof of the old Hupp Motors behind it). After that, on Rust en Vreugd territory, is a 1940 deco-meets-golden-glazed-brick building (PWD maybe) and the Kimberley Hotel.
