We may divide light and shade, or chiaroscuro, intolight, which springs immediately from the object whichgives the light, as the sun, moon, candle, 8,-c; reflectedlight, which is first received on one object, and thenthrown back on to another; shade, which is caused bythe part of the object which is in shade being in such asituation that it cannot receive the light; and shadow,which is the absence of light (on a part which oughtotherwise to receive the light, by the intervention of anopaque object, as in Fig. 6, where a shadow is thrownon a part of the ground which would be in light likethe rest, were it not for the post, which being opaque,prevents the light from reaching that part of the ground,and thus causes that absence of light which constitutesshadow.
