Uig beach on the southwest coast of Lewis. It’s best known as the place where the Lewis Chessmen were discovered, thought to have been made in Trondheim, Norway, in the late 1100s. They were carved from walrus ivory and whales’ teeth and shaped as seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights, castles and pawns.
