Kagiso Trust, in collaboration with civil society organisations is coordinating a National Consultative Conference to establish the state of the NGO sector, with the aim of developing a common plan of action towards the ‘South Africa We Want’. The conference will be held from 08-11 November 2022 at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg and will be live streamed on Zoom for all to join.
In the context of widespread concern and a decline in our democratic accountability, setbacks to social justice on several fronts, the erosion of a capable state and worsening socio economic-conditions facing communities across the country, the conference will formulate a National Action Plan for the NGO sector which focuses on:
- Key action plans for a state-civil society institutional framework
- Key action plans for enabling environment, resource mobilisation and NPO capacity building
- Framing of sector priority actions and campaigns
- Recommendations for NPO coordination processes
On the evening of the 88h of November at 6pm the conference will host a dinner conversation with invited guest Mr Mcebisi Jonas.
The National NGO Consultative Conference is underpinned by a series of engagements supported by research and studies undertaken by Kagiso Trust to establish the state of the NGO sector. This movement remains vital for our democracy to mature and flourish. NGOs must re-affirm their stance as a progressive, dynamic, and positive sector.
Challenges faced by NGOs also present opportunities for the sector to reflect and rebuild. Like many others, the NGO sector has experienced strains in engaging effectively with the evolving developmental context over the last 28 years. Kagiso Trust is calling on the South African NGO sector to join in this process of self-reflection, self-understanding, and revitalisation to reverse the direction of our country.
This process seeks and deserves a constructive role for NGOs and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to renew the dream for a prosperous and just South Africa. The conference is aimed at building common ground and coordinated action in the period ahead.

Kagiso Trust was founded in 1985, a year in which a state of emergency was declared in South Africa and at a time of heightened anti-apartheid resistance and mobilisation throughout the country. This was also a period of a vibrant, well-organised, resilient, innovative, responsive, and progressively engaged NGO sector – a beacon of hope and a shield for communities in distress.
