Mzansi Rugby League Says the Future of South African Rugby Requires Stronger City-Based Professional Clubs

Johannesburg — The Mzansi Rugby League (MRL) says one of the biggest opportunities in South African rugby lies in building stronger city-based professional club ecosystems capable of creating deeper supporter identity, stronger local economies and more sustainable long-term professional rugby structures.

According to the league, South Africa possesses one of the strongest rugby cultures in the world, with elite schools, passionate communities, historic amateur clubs and a player pipeline that continues to supply professional rugby competitions globally.

However, the MRL believes the country still lacks a modern weekly city-based professional rugby product capable of consistently connecting local communities to professional club identities over the course of a long domestic season.

“Across world sport, the strongest ecosystems are built around cities, communities and weekly club identity,” said Thomas Bratos, Chief Information Officer of the Mzansi Rugby League.

“When people support a club that represents their city, their region and their identity every single week, sport becomes much bigger than occasional events. It becomes culture.”

The league says city-based professional rugby structures have already proven successful globally across competitions such as:

France’s Top 14,
Japan Rugby League One,
Premiership Rugby,
Super Rugby,
and Major League Rugby.

According to the MRL, these ecosystems create recurring engagement between clubs and communities through:

weekly fixtures,
local rivalries,
supporter identity,
long-form seasons,
digital storytelling,
and commercially sustainable club structures.

The MRL believes South African rugby possesses all the ingredients necessary for similar long-term club ecosystems, including:

elite rugby schools,
established amateur clubs,
rugby-supporting communities,
strong regional identity,
and global rugby credibility.

The league says its own structure has been specifically designed around city and regional identity through founding clubs including:

Durban Hyenas,
Cape Town Kudus,
Paarl Caracals,
Stellenbosch Bushbucks,
Jozi Wildcats,
Vaal Meerkats,
Pretoria Warthogs,
Midlands Bongos,
Ballito Barracudas,
and Potchefstroom Sables.

The MRL Premier Division is scheduled to launch in March 2027 with:

10 founding clubs,
an 18-round home-and-away regular season,
weekly Sunday fixtures,
playoffs,
and a Championship Weekend finale.

According to the league, the objective extends beyond rugby itself.

The MRL says stronger city-based rugby ecosystems could also create broader opportunities across:

hospitality,
events,
local sponsorship,
sports media,
tourism,
content creation,
merchandising,
and regional economic activity.

“Strong clubs create more than rugby teams,” the statement continued.

“They create gathering points for communities. They create jobs. They create local pride. They create stories people want to follow every week.”

The league also believes modern sports ecosystems must increasingly operate as direct-to-consumer media businesses, which is why the MRL is building its own streaming platform, MRLtv, as part of its long-term digital strategy.
