A Maui native who has played his way to world elite status in classical music is bringing Lincoln Center to Maui in May. The Maui-bound musicians, mainly Lincoln Center stars and alums, have amassed a significant number of prizes. These include a rare honor for Yizhak Schotten, newly named as only the 14th recipient of the American Viola Society's Career Achievement Award. Schotten and his wife, pianist Katherine Collier, have been the 39-year-old Maui festival's music directors since its beginning. The 2020 concerts are scheduled Friday, May 8, at Makawao Union Church, Monday and Friday, May 11 and 15, at Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena, and Wednesday, May 13, at Wananalua Congregational Church in H?na. Maui's Kurt Muroki, a Baldwin High School graduate, took a rare path to stardom, playing the double bass. One reviewer's description of what he called a memorable performance said it "felt like it was actually a sung piece or an aria from an opera made possible by the clarity of how Muroki played his solo parts." With him at the festival will be current Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center artists Ida Kavafian, violin, and Steven Tenenbom, viola. Like Muroki, pianist Anna Polonsky and violinist Benny Kim have performed with the Society. The cellist will be Peter Wiley, praised by the New York Times for his "warmth of tone," who played in the acclaimed Guarneri String Quartet from 2001 to 2009.
