Markham YorkU Scholars Hub – Exercise and the Heart: What Every Sports Buff Should Know – a Sport interest event taking place on 2019-04-11 19:00:00 in Canada
Join Markham Public Library and York University as we bring to Markham a taste of the university experience. Each month YorkU faculty will bring their amazing research and provide an opportunity for our community to learn something new. The Presenter: Peter Backx (Professor and Canada Research Chair, Faculty of Science) Talk Description: We all know exercise is good for the mind and body. Recent studies have found a link between endurance sports and atrial fibrillation, the most common electrical disturbance (i.e. arrhythmia) affecting the upper chambers of the heart whose incidence is reaching epidemic levels. Exercise’s association with atrial fibrillation is unexpected because this condition is more commonly associated with aging, heart disease and general poor cardiovascular health. Our mouse models reveal that endurance exercise causes atrial alterations resembling closely changes seen in atrial fibrillation patients and are thereby providing us with novel approaches for treating and preventing this cardiac arrhythmia. Registrant information (name and contact info) will be shared with event organizers (York University & Markham Public Library). By registering for the event, you're letting us know you're okay with that! If not, please email mplcommunitylibrarians@markham.library.on.ca to register.
