Leica has given only limited details beyond the basic specs, but says the two ultrawides are suited to landscape, architecture and astrophotography.

The 12-24mm F2.8 is a fast ultrawide zoom for the L-mount system, allowing its use on cameras from Panasonic and Sigma, as well as Leica’s own SL models. It’s designed to complement the existing Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 f/2.8 ASPH standard zoom.

It features 18 elements in 13 groups and can focus down to 0.28m (11″) across its entire zoom range, giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:7.4. It has a rear filter holder and an integrated lens hood. It’s designed to be dust and splash resistant and features a ‘Hydrophobe Aqua-Dura’ coating on its front and rear elements, to keep moisture at bay.

Both lenses are available immediately, with the 14-24mm F2.8 having a recommended price of $2495 and the 21mm F2 selling for around $5495.

Unlocking the Power of Ultra-Wide Angles: Leica Debuts Lenses for Elevated Landscape, Architecture & Astrophotography

Teaneck, October 19th, 2023 – Renowned camera brand, Leica Camera, has unveiled two cutting-edge additions to their SL-System: the Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. and the Super-APO-Summicron-SL 21 f/2 ASPH. Perfect for professional photographers and enthusiasts alike, these lenses promise unparalleled image quality.

The Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. caters to photographers desiring a 14 mm focal length with the SL-System. This Leica lens delivers breathtaking panoramas and videos, thanks to its consistent f/2.8 aperture. Its advanced optical design ensures sharp images from edge to edge, making it an excellent choice for landscape, architecture, and astrophotography. The wide diagonal viewing angle of up to 114 degrees lead to unavoidable distortions and aberrations in ultra wide-angle lenses, which are excellently compensated by the elaborate optical construction of the Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. The lens’s chromatic aberration compensation and aspherical lenses enhance its appeal. Alongside the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 f/2.8 ASPH., photographers gain a broader focal range without the added bulk.

Both lenses serve to elevate the SL-System offerings while underscoring the L-Mount alliance’s robust portfolio.

The Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. is available for $2495, while the Super-APO- Summicron-SL 21 f/2 ASPH. is priced at $5495. Available now at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorized dealers.

Our DPREVIEW Tribute:

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview closed on 10 April 2023. This difficult decision was part of the annual operating plan review that parent company, Amazon, shared earlier this year.

Over the course of 25 years, DP Review built up a reputation as being one of the most informative places to go for information about that new camera or lens you’re after. DP Review began as an independent reviews site based in the UK in 1998, the brainchild of Philip and Joanna Askey, but it was eventually purchased by Amazon in 2007 and relocated over to Seattle in the USA in 2010.

Cheers DPReview – thanks for the great work and content that guided photographers, videographers and techno junkies the world over!
