KZN to assert itself as Africa’s premier meetings destination

Sonto Mayise, General Manager of the Durban KZN Convention Bureau at Meetings Africa 2022

When Meetings Africa 2022 takes place in Johannesburg from 28 February to 2 March 2022, Tourism KZN will put its best foot forward to lobby for more conferences to come to the Zulu Kingdom where its flagship venue, the Durban ICC, has won several global awards.

The pan-African trade show that aims to recognise Africa as a sought-after business events destination will be staged in a physical format after an absence in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourism KZN will use Meetings Africa 2022 as a springboard from which to showcase to an array of exhibitors and buyers from across Africa and the world, that it is all set to reignite KZN’s business and leisure tourism industry.

The expo provides a comprehensive panorama of the travel industry in Africa.

Thousands of delegates from around the world will converge at the Sandton Convention Centre to find suitable venues as destinations for their next big conference and meetings.

The KZN delegation will include representatives of several district municipalities to offer buyers and professional conference organisers more options of venues and KZN destinations to explore.

The Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs will work closely with district municipalities to ensure the geographic spread of business events where their ultimate aim is to ensure that the economic impact of business tourism is felt in all corners of our beautiful province.

Sonto Mayise, General Manager of the Durban KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau, said the Meetings Africa 2022 trade show offers Tourism KZN the opportunity to boast the true grit and determination of the provincial travel and tourism sector to recover, renew and rise again.

She quoted an old Zulu proverb stressing that one must never despair in times of adversities and quit, because in time, new opportunities are bound to appear.

“Thus, it is with a never-say-die attitude that the business travel and tourism industry in KwaZulu-Natal is poised to bounce back,” said Mayise.

Mayise added that the Durban-KZN Convention Bureau will be hosting international buyers from Meetings Africa in the South Coast, North Coast, Drakensberg, and Durban after the exhibition to truly experience the province and get to see the conference facilities and venues that KZN has to offer.

KZN boasts exceptional business events venues, ranging from the award-winning Chief Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre in Durban to venues in Zululand, South Coast, Drakensberg, Dolphin Coast Natal Midlands, Battlefields and Elephant Coast. We pride ourselves as the only province with attractive beaches and breath-taking landscape – all ready to welcome both business and ordinary tourists.

KZN’s standing on the global business events stage was evidenced by the many international events that have been hosted in the province in recent years as well as major events booked to take place over the next few years.

The province’s unique selling points apart from excellent MICE facilities were undoubtedly the myriad of tourism experiences that we also have on offer including the amazing weather and the most welcoming people.

Tourism has shown to be an efficient sector for economic growth enabling the diversification of a local economy attracting local and foreign investment and therefore attracting more business travellers to explore the beautiful province.

Through the Durban-KZN Convention Bureau, emerging tourism entrepreneurs from the province will be afforded an opportunity to participate at Meetings Africa, where they can also forge strategic relationships with international partners who can propel their businesses to a much higher level.
