Journalists in the News This Week – Record Number Killed in Line of Duty

Journalism can be tough – especially when uncovering the truth or covering any form of conflict. Many journalists have stories of how they were threatened by disgruntled subjects, shot at or beaten up. So, naturally most news stories about journalists are unfortunately of the, “If it bleeds. it leads type!”

eNCA covered a piece about three journalists detained in Turkey over an article about an Istanbul prosecutor

Journalists Ugur Koc and Berkant Gultekin, who work for the online  BirGun.net, and its managing editor Yasar Gokdemir were taken from their homes late Saturday for “targeting individuals engaged in counterterrorism efforts”, BirGun editor-in-chief Ibrahim Varli wrote on X.

Worth a read is Michael Markovitz opinion piece published in the Daily Maverick

Titled; “The global assault on public interest journalism and the fight for digital sovereignty.”

Markovitz says that what’s unfolding in the US is not just familiar – it’s the most audacious State Capture project the world has ever witnessed. Fear now stalks federal agencies, where public servants committed to the public good are being purged in a systematic dismantling of institutional independence.

A record number of journalists was killed around the world last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Wednesday, adding that Israel was responsible for nearly 70% of the deaths.

At least 124 journalists in 18 countries died in 2024, the deadliest year for reporters and media workers since the committee started recording the numbers more than three decades ago, the CPJ said in a statement.

The number of journalists and media workers killed in 2024 is up sharply over recent years: 102 were killed in 2023 and 69 were killed in 2022, according to CPJ. The previous record high deaths were in 2007, when 113 journalists lost their lives, almost half due to the Iraq war, said the committee.

The Daily Maverick’s Ray Mahlaka wished readers goodbye after 5 years at the publication

Mahlaka started his piece saying; “With your patience and indulgence, I would like to break the journalistic tradition. Doing so will require sharing my opinions and reflecting on my five years with Daily Maverick while covering South Africa’s complex political economy.

My journey with Daily Maverick started in mid-2019 when former editor Tim Cohen called me, informing me about Daily Maverick’s grand plan of diversifying its news coverage into business, economics and finance. To do so, a new unit at Daily Maverick, called Business Maverick, would be established.

I thought Cohen was insane in wanting to launch a standalone business news unit….
