Recipient of four Tony Awards, Martin McDonagh’s 1998 black comedy “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” will be on stage at A.C.T. Studio Theatre Jan. 20 – 29. Set in a cottage in the Irish village of Leenane in the early 1990s, Maureen—a 40-year-old spinster—lives under the demanding weight of her 70-year-old mother Mag but dreams of being swept away by a handsome man. Enter Pato, a salt-of-the-earth gentleman, who is not dissuaded by rumors of Maureen's troubled past or her tart tongue and sour worldview. Mag, hoping to continue having her daughter wait on her hand and foot, will do anything to thwart Maureen's plans for marriage and keep her on the farm. What Mag fails to realize is that even a gentle rabbit, when backed into a corner, may act in ways wholly surprising and far from pleasant.
Director Dennis O’Donovan says Beauty Queen is delightfully witty and humorous—until the stakes are raised. Veteran actress Pat Burgemeister, Clelia Patrizio, Mitch Price and Michael Ladewig star in this award-winning play by Martin McDonagh, the first in Mr. McDonagh’s famous Leenane Trilogy.
