One of the mostfrequent reasons for this is that the ownermakes the mistake of hanging up the canaryscage too high in the room with this result:that the fumes from the gas and all the foulair in the apartment which rises to the topgradually work their effect upon the lungs ofthe little songster and he dwindles and dies.The healthiest place in a room is mid-waybetween the floor and the ceiling, and whenpossible the canary-cage should always beplaced on a table instead of being hung upbetween the curtains, as is the usual practice.Of course the bird must not be allowed toremain where there is a draught—there isall the difference in the world between thebird being out in the open air where it canexercise itself and keep its blood warm, andits being shut up in a small cage where itcannot fly about. They require insects, or if not insects they must have the nearest substitutes we can get to insect life. There are plenty of these on the market—ants eggs, dried flies, etc. One of the best things to give insectivorous bkds is a little desiccated meat—this can also be obtained in the form of dried meat or lean meat shred, and in that form is the fibrous product remaining after extract has been pressed out of the meat. ^cT^c.
