faculty, establishedin Kings College in 1767, became in June i860,the Medical College of Columbia. In 1891 itsurrendered its separate charter and became anintegral part of Columbia College. A peculiar-ity of the Columbia organization is the systemby which seniors in Columbia College, who haveentered the college not later than the beginningof the junior year, are allowed to select part orall of the courses necessary for the bachelorsdegree from among those designated by theuniversity faculties, professional or non-profes-sional, as open to them. The object of thisarrangement is to shorten the time necessary tothe attainment of the higher, particularly of theprofessional, degrees. The degree of master oflaws is conferred for advanced work in lawdone under the faculties of law and politicalscience together. The faculties of law, medi-cine, and applied science, conduct respectivelythe schools of law, medicine, and mines, chem-istry, engineering, and architecture, to which COLUMBIA RIVER.
