It contains nosolitory species ; and the essential character, by which it ismost distinguished from the Helianthoida, is the intimateconnection of the individuals of the same mass. In the com.-mon Alc^onium, the polypidom has something of a spongytexture ; being composed of a gelatinous flesh burrowed bya network of canals, and strengthened by a multitude ofspicules of mineral matter, which form a sort of loose skeletonthat extends throughout the mass, especially strengtheningits surface. In the Tttbipora musica, or organ-pipe coral, theexternal integument of each polype is completely consoli-dated into a calcareous tube. On the other hand, in the R^d Coral, it is the centre which is thus hardened,forming a very dense stony axis, on the smooth surface of which not a vestige of polj-pe-cells can be detected.This aiis is clothed in the li%-Tng state with a gelatinous flesh that is channelled out, like that of the -Jleyooium,
