In the spartdrils, within circles, are quatrefoils containing-shields, now blank; and in the triangular recess, formed by the mouldingsover the door, is a shield, inscribed with the letters gilt, amidst foliage. This division is terminated by a concave frieze and a mouldingof vine branches, deeply undercut. Within the frieze, sculptured in boldrelief, is the name Jj£>£I|?, twice repeated; together with the Abbotsrebus, namely, an Eye, with a Slip, or Branch, of a tree grasped by a Hand:this, also, is twice repeated ; and in both sculptures is likewise representeda Man slipping from the Branch. At each end is a shield with the arms ofIslip, viz. Erm. a Fess between three Weazels passant, Gules; and near thecentre, are three other shields, which have been purposely defaced; thelargest was probably charge
