When he laughs, which is not often, the left cheek showsa dimple that you would think charming in a child or ayoung woman. The face is placid ; it is that of a diplo-matist who knows how to wait and see what you are go-ing to say or do. All suddenly this face lights up, andthe gaze becomes resolute ; it is the face of a man ofaction, who knows how to seize an occasion and turn itto account. His dress is neglige, and his hat impossible.

MR. RHODES HOUSE. I have seen him go to the Parliament House in a graycut-away coat, and go into his room to put on theblack frock-coat which is de rigueur for the colonialmembers. The sitting over, the black coat is putaway in its cupboard. Prigs take offence at his free-and-easy ways. There is a story that he was oncepresent at the opening of a new railway line. Thestation happened to be by the sea. In the middle of JOHN BULL & CO. 259 the ceremony, all at once, Mr. Rhodes is missed, andevery one wonders what has become of him. Suddenlysome one espies, a hundred yards off, the figure of thePremier, en Apollon, coming out of the sea and goingtowards his clothes, which he had left on the beachwhilst he took a dip. ? Opportunist par excellence, Mr. Rhodes serves JohnBull and the Afrikander-Bond, and takes care thatthey both serve him.
