Gert-Johan Coetzee: The Arrival of a Visionary – South African Fashion Week SS/25

From a small town in South Africa to the world’s fashion capitals, Gert-Johan Coetzee has always believed that dreams are stitched not from fabric alone, but from imagination, perseverance, and heart. Born in Koster, North West Province, Coetzee’s love for design began in childhood, crafting dresses for his sister’s Barbie dolls from garden flowers, transforming pencils into couture models parading across his school desk. From these humble beginnings, his extraordinary vision took shape. Graduating as the top student from the North West School of Design, he launched his own label, Gert-Johan Coetzee, in 2010, establishing himself as a leader in South African luxury fashion.

Today, Gert-Johan Coetzee is a global name, dressing icons including Oprah Winfrey, Kourtney Kardashian, and Kelly Rowland, while remaining rooted in a deep commitment to empowering future generations through his Fashion Bursary program.

At South African Fashion Week 2025, Coetzee unveiled his most personal and groundbreaking collection to date: The Arrival, a visionary fusion of heritage, identity, and futurism.

The Arrival tells a powerful story: imagining South Africans returning after 10 000 years among the stars, carrying with them a heritage that has evolved but never disappeared. Inspired by his own journey battling imposter syndrome, Coetzee uses fashion to ask a profound question: what parts of us endure, even when everything else changes?

“This collection is a homecoming,” says Gert-Johan Coetzee. “It is a reminder that no matter how far we travel, or how much we transform, our roots and our dreams stay stitched into our souls. We do not lose who we are, we evolve it.”

The evening was an immersive experience like no other. Guests entered a futuristic world, each wearing headphones transmitting an intimate, celestial soundscape. A life-sized hologram of Coetzee sketching and discarding designs revealed the vulnerability of the creative process, surrounded by wooden spikes pierced with real sketches, a raw and moving testament that even discarded ideas build the path to greatness.

The runway came alive with structured metallics, ancestral beadwork, and cosmic silhouettes that shimmered like distant galaxies. The experience concluded with holographic models appearing after the show, seemingly suspended in time and space, a breathtaking vision of identity unbound by gravity. The evening was attended by South Africa’s leading celebrities, including Lira, Nadia Nakai, Lerato Kganyago, David Tlale, Natasha Joubert, and Somizi, all celebrating a designer who continues to break boundaries while honouring his roots.

Through The Arrival, Gert-Johan Coetzee reminds the world that heritage is not a relic of the past, it is an everevolving force, carried across time, space, and imagination. In every thread he weaves, Coetzee proves that true creativity does not forget where it comes from, it carries its history proudly into the future.
