From otters to smelt – the weird and wonderful creatures of the River Tyne:
The Tyne has come a long way in the past 30 years with the once filthy river supporting an array of wildlife from otters to water voles Once universally known as the Coaly Tyne, the exports down the river from the region's coalfields, and every other kind of industry from shipyards to factories crammed on to the banks, meant little wildlife could survive in the lower reaches of the great waterway. Then direct discharges into the river were tackled with the Tyneside Sewerage Interceptor Scheme which directed waste to Northumbrian Water's Howdon treatment plant.
