Last weekend, 3 February, saw 312 athletes competing in 400 items in hot and humid conditions at the Westbourne Oval.
The Track & Field season opened in September, so this was the sixth competitive League event of the 2023/2024 season but the second event this year.
League 6 showcased a number of outstanding athletes who put in a brilliant effort to qualify to represent EPA at the National Athletic Championships in March & April this year.
One talented young Kariega athlete in grade 11 from Daniel Pienaar High School, Marko Ferriera, competed in the u/18 age category, and ran 10.5s in the 100m and an impressive 22.0s in the 200m.
His personal best time in the 200m this season is 21.6s.
Marko’s coach, Yolande Vosloo is extremely proud of his achievements.
“Marko is an exceptional athlete to work with, he is disciplined and committed to his athletics training.
“Last year he finished fourth in the u/18 100m final and achieved a silver medal in u/18 200m final at the National Schools Track & Field Championships even though he was a year younger than his competitors, an amazing achievement for a 16-year-old”, added Vosloo.
EP Athletics Track & Field Chairperson, Riaan Barnard, confirmed that Luxolo Adams, running for Madibaz athletic club, Gqeberha’s 200m Olympian, will be competing this weekend at NMU stadium.
Mondray Barnard, 110m hurdler from Heat Club who won a Silver medal for 2023 SA Athletic Championship, will be kicking of his hurdle season, with some other great athletes in action like Sherwin Van Staden, Madibaz Sprinter and SA finalist, and Nikithemba Hani, Varsity College Long jumper and a SA’s Bronze medallist, to mention a few.
Track & Field League 7 will be held on Saturday, February 10, at NMU Madibaz Stadium.
NMBM, the proud host of the EPA Championships, and EP Athletics share the vision to develop world class athletes by creating platforms for local athletes to compete amongst top South African athletes.
Spectators are welcome at a cost of R30 per person.
