Emerald Bay from Shore

In 1880 Paul Kirby purchased the land around Emerald Bay, building cabins for a tourist resort. Not particularly successful, ownership transferred to a former visitor, William Armstrong, in 1892. Amstrong turned the area into his own summer residence. In 1929 the land transferred again, this time to Lora Knight, heir to the fortune of National Biscuit, Continental Can, Diamond Match, Union Pacific, and Rock Island Railroad. Knight had her own mansion built, the Nordic-themed Vikingsholm, designed by her nephew Lennart Palme. The 38-room building, filled with Viking elements including sod-roofs, dragon motifs, granite boulders embedded in mortar, and hand-hewn elements. The entire building was constructed without nails. It is considered one of the finest pieces of Scandinavian architecture in the United States. Knight lived here over the summer until her death in 1945. Afterwards it transferred to lumberman Harvey West, who in 1953 sold the land at 50% of the value to the State of California.
