Digital Innovation in Mine Surveying: Flexible Resection Capability for Modern Mining Operations

Mine surveyors operate in environments defined by constraint. Ground movement alters reference points. Production advances limit access. Physical obstructions restrict line of sight. In these conditions, conventional survey methodology can introduce inefficiencies, operational delays, and unnecessary risk.

Mineware Consulting has introduced new resection survey functionality within the Syncromine Survey Module. This enhancement allows surveyors to establish position from unknown points by sighting known control pegs, providing a more adaptable and safety conscious approach to underground and surface surveying.

This development strengthens the practical value of Syncromine in live mining environments where conditions evolve daily.

A Practical Shift in Survey Methodology
Traditionally, forward surveying requires an instrument to be set up on a known control point and oriented toward an unknown point. While effective, this method assumes that the known setup location remains accessible and safe. In underground operations, that assumption does not always hold.

The newly integrated resection capability reverses the dependency. Surveyors can now establish their instrument at any suitable location and calculate their position by observing up to six known pegs. The system then computes the instrument coordinates based on these references, maintaining accuracy without requiring a fixed setup point.

This shift introduces meaningful operational flexibility. If a previous setup location is obstructed by support structures, equipment, or ground instability, the surveyor can reposition and continue work without disrupting the survey network.

Safety as a Structural Benefit

The safety implications are significant.

Resection surveying reduces the need to install or drill additional control points in unstable zones. In particular, avoiding drilling into the hanging wall mitigates the risk of destabilisation and potential rockfall. The ability to establish position from sidewall pegs or alternative reference points supports safer working practices in confined or high-risk areas.

Improved Accuracy Through Geometry Awareness

Beyond flexibility, the Syncromine update introduces graphical visualisation of resection geometry. Surveyors can review the strength of their resection configuration in real time, distinguishing between robust geometric setups and weaker arrangements.

This visual feedback enables informed decision making in the field. If the geometry is suboptimal, additional observations can be taken immediately. If one observation is obstructed or erroneous, it can be excluded without invalidating the remaining dataset.

The result is a more resilient survey process. Minor discrepancies no longer necessitate complete resurveying. Instead, recalculation options allow surveyors to refine results while preserving valid measurements.

Operational Efficiency in Active Workings

In active mining environments, time lost to rework translates directly into production impact. By allowing survey teams to adapt to physical constraints without restarting the process, resection capability supports uninterrupted workflows.

The use of multiple known pegs, up to six reference points, strengthens redundancy and enhances computational accuracy. This reduces the likelihood of repeat visits to the same working area, saving both labour time and logistical coordination.

For operations focused on precision planning, stope reconciliation, and development tracking, improved survey reliability directly contributes to better operational data integrity.

Integrated Intelligence Within Syncromine

The resection upgrade is delivered as part of a general enhancement to the Syncromine Survey Module. Survey data sits at the foundation of mine management. It informs planning, compliance, reconciliation, and risk assessment. By strengthening survey accuracy and adaptability, Syncromine enhances the integrity of downstream processes across the digital mining environment.

From survey management to production planning, risk tracking, and compliance oversight, Syncromine provides an integrated platform designed for the realities of modern mining operations.

Resection functionality is a technical refinement, yet its implications are strategic. It enables safer practice, reduces inefficiency, and improves data reliability in environments where precision and adaptability are non-negotiable.

For South African mines operating in complex geological and logistical contexts, practical innovation at the survey level translates directly into operational resilience.
