Delivering hope: helping South Africa’s children overcome barriers
Education plays a crucial role in a child’s future, but many young learners encounter significant challenges in accessing school. For some, the journey involves a lengthy walk along potentially unsafe roads. Additionally, many of these children attend school without eating, affecting their ability to concentrate on lessons and retain information.
UNICEF reports that 62% of South African children face “multidimensional poverty,” which goes beyond financial hardship to include limited access to education and basic infrastructure. Additionally, only 21% of children under five have access to an adequate diet, highlighting the critical need for initiatives like these in underprivileged communities.
This makes it essential for communities and businesses to get involved and make a difference. Fastway Couriers partnered with the NGO People of South Africa and Unitaspark Laerskool in Vereeniging, Gauteng, to deliver over 200 grocery and Christmas hampers to primary school students in November. The last-mile experts facilitated the delivery of these essential supplies, supporting local organisations in impactful ways. Fastway’s R20,000 donation to the NGO helped bring joy to the children and their families during this heartwarming initiative.
“Working with our partner for good, Fastway Couriers, was an absolute pleasure to bring hope to the Vaal Community,” commented Gilbert Martin, Founder of the People of South Africa Foundation.
“The day was magical, and it was much fun joining the school, parents, and children to bring hope. Our project, ‘Go back to your roots,’ brings me back to the community where I came from, and it is extra special to return as an old Vaalie and make a small impact in the lives of the future,” added Martin.
“We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and that starts with meeting their most basic needs,” commented Damian Velayadum, Group Financial Director at Fastway Couriers. “Partnering with People of South Africa to deliver these hampers allowed us to lend a helping hand and bring hope to young learners. Supporting the communities we serve is part of who we are, and we’re proud to play a role in making a difference where it’s needed most.”
Fastway has previously partnered with iLoveBoobies, a charity dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness. The organisation estimates that while approximately 10,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, the actual figure should be closer to 47,000, highlighting the critical gap in testing and screening, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
Initiatives like these show that businesses have a unique opportunity to contribute beyond their commercial goals, fostering positive change in areas where it’s most needed. By addressing basic needs, supporting education, and raising awareness around life-threatening diseases, South African companies can help reduce barriers to learning and development, ultimately strengthening communities.
