By Jerome Izaaks, ABC International – Political Commentator:
The Democratic Alliance’s latest theatrical performance reveals the party’s fundamental hypocrisy regarding South Africa’s Government of National Unity. While John Steenhuisen pounds podiums about corruption and threatens vote-of-no-confidence motions against President Ramaphosa, his actions expose a party more interested in preserving privilege than principle.
Steenhuisen’s dramatic withdrawal from the National Dialogue and threats to vote against departmental budgets for ministers like Thembi Simelane and Nobuhle Nkabane ring hollow when examined closely. If the DA truly believed corruption was destroying the country, they would exit the GNU entirely. Instead, they’ve chosen selective outrage that conveniently maintains their access to power.
The reality is transparent: DA ministers have become intoxicated by the perks of national government. Blue light brigades, taxpayer-funded luxury accommodations, cushy pensions, and endless networking opportunities have transformed supposed opposition politicians into comfortable establishment figures.
This calculated positioning allows the DA to appear principled while securing vital resources for future election campaigns. Their threats are carefully calibrated – loud enough to satisfy their voter base, but restrained enough to preserve their governmental benefits.
Steenhuisen’s GNU strategy isn’t about fighting corruption; it’s about having cake and eating it too. South Africans deserve better than this opportunistic political theater.
