Culture & International Mental Health Conference 2017 – a Culture interest event taking place on 2017-11-08 09:00:00 in United Kingdom

The Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry research group is pleased to announce that the 7th Culture and International Mental Health Conference will return to Manchester on Wednesday 8th November 2017. The central theme of the conference is suicide and self-harm prevention and will cover topics such as self-harm and suicide among young people, suicide in low-middle income countries, suicide prevention and driving change. Up to 450 million individuals worldwide suffer from mental health problems and in 2012, 804,000 suicides occurred globally. WHO have reported that in high income countries approximately 17.6% of deaths in young adults (15 – 29) were attributed to suicides and 90% of suicides were linked to mental health problems. (http://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/noncommunicable-diseases/mental-health/data-and-statistics) Keynote speaker – Professor Louis Appleby Professor of Psychiatry at The University of Manchester and Director of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness. He leads the National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England and is a Non-Executive Director of the Care Quality Commission, the NHS regulator. The CIMH conference hosts an excellent programme and range of opportunities to learn, and develop skills with a broader outlook on mental health through workshops and talks hosted by international and national speakers from globally diverse cultural backgrounds. Delegates will be provided an opportunity to hear about mental health research of global impact, the challenges of conducting such research and the opportunities for positive impact in the community. The conference allows the opportunity for innovation and raising awareness as well as networking with academics and researchers in the field of mental health.
