This road is one of the better ones in the area, and in fact in the majority of South Africa. As we walked along it, I spoke to our guide about the politics of the country and the feeling of the indigenous people about the rough ride they still seem to be getting, even though they are now self-governing.
Despite the inadequate infrastructure and utilities, the people are very understanding and sympathetic to their politicians, and appreciate that what little they have now is a vast improvement on the recent past. The general feeling is that progress is slow but steady, and because of this the ANC will stay in power for a long time to come, despite certain high-profile failings.
