Measurements: Length male about 17 cm, female about 13 cm; wing (13 male) 52,5-54-57, (2 female) 50; tail (longest rectrices, 13 male) 68-82, (2 female) 42-46; tarsus (15) 15-16,5; culmen (15) 20-23. Weight (15 male) 9-10-11,3 g, (3 female) 8,6-9,1-9,7 g.
Bare Parts: Iris dark brown; bill, legs and feet black.
Identification: Size small. Male: Head, throat and mantle bright metallic green; rest of upperparts olive green; upper breast metallic violet; lower breast bright deep orange, shading to lighter orange and yellow on belly; tail blackish, central rectrices elongated. Female: Above olive greenish grey; below olive yellowish, paler on belly (yellower than female Lesser Doublecollared Sunbird; best separated by voice); wings and tail blackish. Immature: Similar to adult female.
Voice: Tinny twangy sibilant sshraynk or sskrang callnote, often repeated 2 or more times; male calls sharp ke-ke-ke-ke when chasing female; song subdued rapid warble lasting up to 60 seconds, interspersed with characteristic twangy callnotes.
Distribution: Western and sw Cape from near Vanrhynsdorp to e Cape around Port Elizabeth; vagrant to East London.
Status: Common resident.
Habitat: Fynbos with Protea and Erica in winter-rainfall region, from sea level to bleak mountain slopes.
Habits: Solitary or in pairs when breeding; otherwise gregarious in loose flocks of up to 100 birds at good food supply. At rest often perches with tail drooped, bill slightly raised and plumage fluffed. Aggressive towards conspecifics and other birds. male has flitting and hovering display flight. Commonly bathes in dew on leaves. Hawks prey in flight.
Food: Nectar (especially of Erica spp.), insects, spiders.
