Check out this South African City image:
“Jan Smuts air port J’Burg. Comet in foreground”, 1953

A De Havilland Comet jetliner owned by BOAC is refueled on the tarmac of Jan Smuts Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Comet was the world’s first commercial jet, and went into service in May, 1952 with BOAC (now British Airways). This photo was taken by a distant relative about a year later. He flew from Johannesburg to London and has photos there labeled "the day before the coronation", which would be June 1st – Queen Elizabeth’s coronation was on the 2nd. Perhaps this, then, is another day earlier.
I just finished reading Aurthur C. Clarke’s The City and The Stars. In it, Clarke spends quite a bit of time describing effects caused by a space ship moving through the Earth’s atmosphere. The book was published in 1953. I wonder if he was inspired by riding a Comet?
This is half of a Kodachrome stereo view, both sides of which are water damaged. I’ll post a 3d version once I get a process running.
