Tongue and Baleen-plates of the Piked Whale,Balcenoptera Boops.* The tongue itself corresponds to the formof the space included by the rami of the lowerjaw, and is consequently of great size in theCachalots and Balsenidse, rising in the latterlike an immense cushion (a, Jig. 259), intothe space between the laminae of baleen (6),and affording a great quantity of the finest oil.In the figure it is represented in the PikedWhale, but probably preternaturally enlargedand raised by the extrication of gas caused byputrefaction. It is thick, and its free extremityis generally short, but this is less remarkablein the Phytophaga than in the Zoophaga. * From Fr. Cuvier, Cetaeea, pi. 20. Paternoster-Row, May, 1836. REV. W. D.
