coloured with concentric yel-lowish stripes, like a peacocks tail. Mauritia gracilis (or Caranai, in native lan-guage), grows on the edge of the waters of RioNegro, and is distinguished for its beauty. Itsslender stem, from twenty to thirty feet high, isringed Avith spines; it has drooping leaves of an ex-quisite silvery green, and clusters of rich brown fruit. A very singular looking smooth, stemmed species, allied to Mauritia flexuosa, was lately discovered byWallace, growing in the district of Rio Negro andthe Upper Orinoco, named by him Mauritia Ca-rama, its native name being Carana. Its singularappearance is occasioned by the immense quantityof fibre which clothes the bases of the leaf stalks, giving to the tree a bearded look. As yet this fibreseems not to be applied to any use. The entireleaves are preferred to all other for thatch from theirgreat durability ; but the leaf fibres, or epidermis, are not used, as with the Miriti, for making cordage.* * Wallaces Palms of the Amazon.
