Cape Town, June, 8, 2021: Enticing new offering has top chefs serving up fine fare for home enjoyment
Cape Town’s latest online delivery platform takes shape in the form of CloudChef, an innovative concept that is bringing the dishes from some of South Africa’s best fine dining chefs and restaurants to your home. The recently-launched site invites avid epicureans and budding foodies alike to order from the likes of Salsify at the Roundhouse, Tjing Tjing and Stickman by Fyn. Each dining experience is delivered with easy-to-follow instructions from the chefs themselves, to ensure each dish is heated and plated to absolute perfection.
The project was born during South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdown, when renowned food and wine writer and founder of @thejoburgfoodie, Steve Steinfeld, partnered with entrepreneurs Louis Buys and Alex Matthews of The Delta – a dynamic tech company that specialises in building ventures and startups – to see how they could support restaurants and chefs weather the storm.
“As fervent foodies, and as both proponents and friends of the industry, we realised that many of these restaurants would require alternative revenue streams to stay open for the foreseeable future,” comments Steinfeld. “Our hope is to create a new market that allows these phenomenal restaurants to add additional income streams to those generated through their physical locations.”
At the advent of COVID-19 and the related lockdown, many chefs were already shifting their business models to support take-away and delivery offerings. While successful, they were logistically challenging for them to manage. Keen to let the chefs stick to what they do best, the founders conceptualised a platform that could, on the restaurant’s behalf, bring all the required components of managing the admin and deliveries together.
Not only does CloudChef support the chefs and restaurants to generate additional revenue, but it allows patrons – also impacted by the financial burden of the lockdown – the opportunity to support their favourite chefs while experiencing their fine cuisine from the safety and comfort of their own homes. And often at more pocket-friendly prices than dining out.
“We are incredibly proud that we have been able to help support these chefs by offering them a platform to showcase their menus and provide the logistics to facilitate delivery,” adds co-founder Louis Buys. “It’s ensured they can continue offering their consumers a high-end experience which up until now has been unavailable on conventional food-delivery apps.”
CloudChef’s range of menu offerings includes full experiences that are perfect for date nights, special occasions, dinner parties and business dinners (meals can be ordered and sent around the city for virtual dining). While the reduced experiences allows for a more laid back, casual approach- perfect for quiet nights in or as easy dinner solutions for the discerning diner – all at the highest culinary level.
The current menus include the likes of Chef Ryan Cole’s Salsify multi-course tasting menu – think yellowtail Sashimi for starters followed by a hearty kapokbos cured lamb rib before ending with his legendary caramel tart. Those interested in the cuisine of Asia will be salivating at the thought of Chef Christi Semczyszyn’s omakase box from Tjing Tjing Momiji – a five course Japanese-inspired experience. While Chef Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss are sending out boxes from their new venture, Stickman by FYN, which offers an ever-enticing assortment of Japanese style-street food, including yakitori, hand-crafted ramen and more. This is all but a taste of what’s on offer with the full menus of each chef available on the CloudChef website.
“It was a no brainer to get involved,” says Chef Ryan Cole of his decision to sign up. “The CloudChef team are like-minded individuals who share the same values as we do [at Salsify] and it’s definitely a gap in the market we could benefit from servicing as a restaurant.”
While dining in more might be part of the new normal, it doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality or taste. CloudChef allows you to select your chef and meal which is then delivered, ready to heat, plate and serve – bringing the restaurant experience to you and your guests.
CloudChef is currently available for order in Cape Town with more restaurants and cities to be added in the due course.
