   Kyle Robertson, the author never fails to amaze me with his unique writing style but also the variety of the genres he works in. I’ve read quite a number of his books from sci-fi to police procedurals. This one is a paranormal horror thriller and thrilling it is. It’s been said of thriller writing that the badder your bad guy, the better the thriller. Kyle has a bad guy who is as bad a dude as I’ve ever read. He’s just plain mean but he believes he’s doing the right thing which only makes it worse. A righteous serial killer who talks to his own personal god. The police procedure part kicks in when a veteran cop, John Chandless, a no nonsense, play it by the book, homicide detective who’s working the case, investigates the worst murder scene the police had been called in on, ever.That’s the horror part. The paranormal genre comes into play when with no clues and the investigation stalling out, John takes the advice of his partner and reluctantly seeks the help of the Witch Lady, a psychic profiler. Lots of twists and turns, thrills and spills (blood spills), and suspense. Like how will John and Amezka, the psychic, ever stop this killer? This book crosses genres like chickens cross the road. It’s also a romance and funny as hell. But you know what? Kyle pulls it off and the result is yet another fine book.

   Celestial Summoner is a unique gem of a book that mixes the detective, who dunnit and the paranormal genres together and creates a fascinating, thrilling and exciting page-turner of a story that will have you guessing who the killer is, compelled to see the detective catch his man and the physic uncover the mystery piece by piece. Plus, as a bonus, reading through to see the blossoming romance between the two main protagonists to sweeten the deal.

   If you’re a fan of the genres, even all 3, this is definitely one book to read and be absorbed in the gripping mystery from start to finish.

   And, just like Midsummer Murders, this book shows that even the rural countryside, a peaceful place like Kansas, can be full of murder, even more than the city itself.

   I traditionally read science-fiction novels or fantasy for enjoyment. Wanting to broaden my horizons, I decided to give the mystery genre a try. This book was a great introduction as it blends the paranormal into it’s plot. The characters in this novel really come to life. Complex, realistic, yet humorous with a flare for the dramatic, they inject some soul into what is otherwise a fun read. Anezka Kranz, the Czechoslovakian profiler with strange psychic powers was a particularly interesting character, and I would love to read a novel focused on her as the main character. The novel pulls off it’s darkly comic tone quite well, and the author’s prose presents it accessibly, while still maintaining a certain poignancy.
